The Promenade Shops' free Friday concert series was supposed to wrap on July 31, when Sofa Killers played the last date on the printed schedule. It didn't. An earlier show, Grizzly Gopher's July 24 slot, got rained out and pushed to a makeup date of August 7, which is this past Friday. That means the season actually closed eight days later than planned. If you missed it, the folding chairs are already stacked, the sound equipment is packed up, and the Friday-at-5-p.m. habit a lot of Briargate households built over the summer just lost its home for the next ten months.
That leaves a specific window right now, before Briarfest takes over the neighborhood's social calendar in a few weeks, when the newest things in Briargate are easiest to actually experience without a line. This is the story of that window and why it matters more than it looks.
Music Under the Mountains ran Fridays from June 26 through July 31 this year, free and open to the public, five to seven in the evening on Pikes Peak Patio next to Ted's Montana Grill. Audi Colorado Springs sponsored the 2026 series, and the lineup moved through Martini Shot, The Runners, Final Eyes, Mimic, and Grizzly Gopher before Sofa Killers took the originally scheduled final slot.
That rain delay is worth sitting with for a second. A neighborhood concert series built around Colorado summer evenings still got interrupted by Colorado summer weather, which is a small but real reminder that even the most reliable seasonal rituals here run on a schedule that includes a backup plan. If you're used to treating the last Friday in July as the end of patio season, this year the actual last show landed more than a week into August.
Briargate was once grassy pastures. It's now one of the largest residential areas in the city, and its commercial gravity has split into two centers that don't always get equal attention.
The Promenade Shops at Briargate, along Briargate Parkway, is the established one. Ted's Montana Grill, Bad Daddy's Burger Bar, Amore Italian Grille, and Nana's Dim Sum & Dumplings anchor the dining lineup there, alongside newer additions like My Neighbor Félix, the Pan-Mexican restaurant and bar that moved in a few years back, and Chicken Salad Chick, which opened its Briargate location in April 2025 near the Promenade with a grand-opening giveaway of free chicken salad for a year to the first 100 guests in line.
Then there's the Shops at Falcon Landing, further north on Academy Boulevard. That's where the newest full-service restaurant to land in Briargate this year actually opened. Shake Shack's second Colorado Springs location started serving burgers and hand-spun shakes at 7465 N. Academy Boulevard on May 14, its 12th location in the state, about four miles south of the city's first Shake Shack, which opened in the InterQuest area in late 2023.
That detail matters more than it seems. While Friday-night attention all summer was pulling south toward the Promenade Shops and its concert series, the neighborhood's biggest new restaurant opening happened at a different retail node entirely. If you've mentally filed "new things in Briargate" under the Promenade Shops address, you missed where the newest thing actually showed up.
Shake Shack wasn't the only addition that landed with less fanfare than it probably deserved. A hands-on aquarium opened inside Chapel Hills Mall back in January, with exhibits built around fish, birds, and reptiles kids can actually get close to. By the time summer hit and pool days and patio concerts took over the weekly rotation, a January opening had already stopped feeling like news, even though it's still one of the few indoor, weather-proof options for families in the neighborhood.
That indoor option got more useful this week for a specific reason. The Briargate YMCA's lap pool, small pool, and hot tub have been closed since late July for the branch's annual deep cleaning and maintenance, with a scheduled reopening date of August 17. If your family's usual water-based routine runs through the Y, this is the stretch where the mall aquarium, or the splash pad at the community center, becomes the backup plan instead of the afterthought.
The one Briargate tradition that doesn't answer to either shopping center's marketing calendar is Briarfest, hosted every year at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church on Scarborough Drive. It's a free, three-day, carnival-style weekend built around rides, live music, food trucks, a car show, a silent auction, and a beer and wine garden, with proceeds historically benefiting the church and its school.
Briarfest has landed on the weekend right after Labor Day for each of the past three years, running September 5 through 7 in 2025, September 6 through 8 in 2024, and September 8 through 10 in 2023. If that pattern holds again this year, the festival should land in the second week of September, which puts it roughly three to four weeks out from where the calendar sits today.
That timing is the actual point of this piece. Between a concert series that just ended and a parish festival that hasn't started, there's a stretch of ordinary weeks that belongs to nobody but the people who already live here. No event banners, no sponsor branding, no lines stretched around a patio.
A few things are still running through this gap and worth building into the next few weeks:
None of these require driving across town. All of them fit inside a normal Briargate week between now and the first weekend the carnival lights go up on Scarborough Drive.
The easy read on this stretch of August is that nothing's happening, that the interesting part of the Briargate calendar is either behind you or a few weeks ahead. The more accurate read is that this is the only window all year when the neighborhood's newest additions, a burger counter that opened in May and an aquarium that opened in January, get tried by the people who actually live nearby instead of getting absorbed into whatever event is pulling the crowd that week. Try the Shackburger without merging into concert traffic. Take the kids through the mall aquarium on a weekday afternoon instead of squeezing it in around pool schedules. That's Briargate in early-to-mid August, and it's worth more attention than the quiet stretch on the calendar usually gets.
